Applauding oppo goalie
|
As an old school admirer of manners, sportsmanship and chivalry in its various forms, I like to observe which if any supporters applaud the opposition goalie as he takes his position at the start of the half. Seasoned observers will find the beginning of the second half particualrly noteworthy because it reflects on the first half agenda.
In my youth everyone did it but it seems now all but lost. Not sure why we did it, it was something just done. Respect for the gladiator perhaps.
Imagine my exitement then when the everton fans applauded Adrian for the second half (perhaps they anticipated the generous gap for the free kick). All clubs have their idiotic supporters but good to see Everton still have some proper fans.
Next week, rare bus spotting.

I still do in a half hearted manner!
Remember any England keeper getting a real ovation, Shilton, Clemence (even at Spurs) when I was a kid

No idea either, but I've done it at every game regardless of who we were playing*
Sometimes it's followed by some swear words when the keeper doesn't acknowledge with a little nod or wave.
*Ok so there's no fucking chance that I'm ever going to give a clap to a keeper playing for someone like Spurs or Millwall.

Their keeper apologising for celebrating was quite funny.

Some still do it in the BM lower. Although their keeper last night got a load of abuse due to his time wasting.

It's manners, like players shaking hands at the end of a match or giving the ball back to the oppo after one of your players has been injured & one of their players has sportingly pput the ball out
It was always done in my day, even in derby matches
The only exception I can remember was at St James Park when thee geordies booed & jeered a teenage Mervyn Day accusing him of being gay & inviting him to show them his arse
But that just shows what unsporting cunts Newcastle have supporting them

I've got no time for people that don't shake hands at the end of the game.
However, before and during the game they are your enemy as far as i'm concerned.
All this handshake before kick off is complete and utter bollocks.
We're also far too quick to kick the ball out for injury these days... Ross Barkley stubbed his toe last night and Jenkinson kicked it out... Unbelievable.

When we played the Germans I had their fans offering me a beer during the game - that there is good manners

First thing I said to the missus after we'd won last night was "I wish they would shake the oppositions hands before celebrating".
I know they get caught in the excitement of the moment, but I've always felt it was important to both win and lose in the right manner.

bushey have you never stubbed your toe before, pretty painful stuff
Good to the Corinthian spirit alive and well in this day and age of cunts like terry that bring the game down to the gutter

glad to hear it survives in BML. I'm TBU and it doesn't happen below me but I accept thats a transient set of seats; sometimes home fans and sometimes away.

Often a look of surprise/incredulity from young keepers when we applaud them. I guess it doesn't happen everywhere.

I think we should try to make the atmosphere as hostile and uncomfortable for the opposition as possible. If getting on a keepers back helps toward making them have an off day all the better. So no the clapping stuff has never been for me.

David Seaman always used to get clapped. Probably one of the only keepers I remember got decent treatment like that.
I remember one game where Les Sealey played against us and the South bank hammered him after clapping him, and he gave it back. Sealey's wife takes it up the arse song, followed by him showing us his arse cheeks. Made the papers next day. Think he was playing for Birmingham.
